How to Make Matcha Green Tea
Curious about how to make matcha tea? Recently on the KimandIke Youtube channel my boyfriend Isaac walks you through 5-easy steps to prepare matcha green tea in the comfort of your own home. I then realized that this simple step-by-step process would be ideal to share with all of you.
But what is this type of tea?
Matcha is a finely ground tea leave that is grown in the shade. Ingesting the fully ground matcha leaf provides drinkers rich antioxidants. This tea is high in a catechin called EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), which is an antioxidant believed to have cancer-fighting effects on the body. Multiple studies have linked green tea to a variety of health benefits such as: potentially helping to prevent heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and even aiding weight loss.
The process of producing matcha involves a unique process of growing the green tea place under the shade. This lasts for three to four weeks before harvest. The shade helps produce more caffeine and chlorophyll creating its distinct bright green color. Although matcha is mainly associated with Japan, it is now consumed all over the world.
Let’s get started then!
Step 1: Heat up some water (For best results use water just under a boil.)
Step 2: Sift 1-2 tsp matcha into a cup using a small sifter.
By sifting, the air will penetrate the tea particles and change the quality of your matcha at a faster rate. I like to think of this like wine, we aerate our wine, so sifting your tea provides the same effects. It also causes your matcha to be very smooth with minimal clumps, resulting in a thin froth with sparse bubbles.

Step 3: Add 2oz hot water
Step 4: Whisk your matcha green tea
Holding the bowl with your left hand and the whisk with your right hand. Try to use your wrist, not your elbow or arm. It is important to vigorously whisk your matcha in a zig zag motion until the tea is frothy. Once froth starts forming, try to circularly rotate the bamboo whisk around the bottom and sides of the bowl.
Step 5: Enjoy!
Either from the bowl or a cup, there is no wrong way to enjoy your tea!
